African Burial Ground National Monument

In May 1991, the General Services Administration unearthed the skeletal remains of nearly 400 individuals of predominantly African ancestry while preparing to erect a building in Lower Manhattan. The building was stopped, but these remains are on view in an interpretative center exploring the history of African-Americans in colonial New York.

African Diaspora Film Festival

Established in 1993 by the husband and wife team of Reinaldo Barroso-Spech and Diarah N’Daw-Spech, this annual festival presents contemporary films either by black directors, about the black experience, starring black actors or that shine a different light on African Diaspora life and culture regardless of the filmmaker’s race or nationality.
